After further discussion at meeting held on sat 10th oct it was decided to inform all members with regards to a proposal from myself to take on a registered charity ( wish upon a star ) full time. It was decided to post this on the forum for all members not present at the meeting to express their opinions. A second proposal was to support a full time charity and a local one. The idea being the full time one is ongoing at all th major shows and events we attend, and for the local events we attend ie carnivals, spilsby/alford show, mini push etc we support the local charity. please feel to express your views so this can be decided for next meeting held on sun 8th November 6.30pm.

while we think wish upon a star is an excellent charity and does alot of good work it is very well supported by many cellebrities and very large companys both in the banking , investment,  sector  and major retail companys [ google it to see ] . we feel that the small amount that we would contribute would be a very small drop in the oceon to the charity where as to a small local charity it could make a huge difference  , we would not mind supporting them for a year but not as a perminent charity , after all we are skegness mini owners club and we feel that we should be doing fund raising that would benefit  more people in the skegness area  . our pesonal thoughts are that we should have a different charity every year so many more local people will benefit from the clubs efforts and the generosity off lincolnshire  people and buisinesses  after all without them there would be no money raised . we are looking in to local charitys for next meeting for some ideas .    will members of the club please air there views on the subject and sugestions on charitys they would wish to support

i agree  with what gina and dave are saying about supporting local charities it would be nice to actually see local people benefit from a local club i can also see what ken means about getting the right authorisation to do things within the legal boundaries at the end of the day we as a small club cannot afford to get it wrong,i also think that we need to see more members actually signing up to the web site and turning up at the monthly meetings as it seems to be the same faces week in and month out that try to make an effort  and at the end of the day if we cant get members to support  locally we dont stand a chance nationally having had time to think about it if we are raising money locally we should ensure it makes a difference locally that way the club might get more recognition locally.....what do you think do we have to stick to the 12 month format could we not extend the time  scale to 2 or 3 yrs ...i dont know over to you

The brach we would give our support to is the grisby whish upon a star as the money would stay in lincolnshier to help the sick and ill kids from our area, they do not get as much help and funding from the celebs this end as the web site leads you to think as it is the main page for wish upon a star........ But yes I also do thing that as a club we have to supoort our local charitys like the skegness A group who take disabled kids on days out and need funds to do so, st andrews hospice ect but we still need the right tins/buckets to do it  and it still need to be voted on sooner rarther than later is what i was saying

This is going to sound hard and uncharitable but we are a mini club and not a collecting club why do we need to be a mini club that is all about collecting money for charity all year round.

Now I im not against doing something for charity but if we want to get local people to support the mini club then we should support a local charity in Skegness.

If a big charity give us tee shirts and banners this will mean that we will have to collect all the time and if we have point of sale stuff at the shows someone will need to pay to get in to the show and spend all day on the club stand and miss out on that show.

Just as an idea how about a run once a year like H2H, or Kings Lynn 2 Great Yarmouth with all profit going a Skegness charity.

As to which charity I will go along with the majority.

Take a look at www.hamoc.co.uk they raised over £1000 on there one run where as we collected most of the year for £750.

But remember a small amount of money and support to a small local charity will be more help then a small amount to a big organization smile

yes fair comment david what about  a coast to coast run or a mini meet held at the welcome that way we could go some way to repaying  the hospitality shown to us from  fidoss and claire and raise some money as well does anybody else have any ideas or views on what as already been suggested

fair comments from everyone but i personally would prefer to support something like the lifeboat or ambucopter-  shame some of the money donated to the lifeboat has to go to rescueing stupid people on inflatables tho !!!!!!!!

I have to agree with both dave and gina and neil. The main thing putting me off the wish apon a star is the fact it is too well supported by celebrities. I watched family fortunes a few weeks ago and one celebs charity was wish apon a star. He won the main jackpot of £30'000. If we raised lets say £2000 over a year thats nothing compared with that. A local charity which doesn't get a lot of support would really benifit from £2000. I would prefere to change charity every year so that more people can benifit from the money we raise. My personal feeling is if we stay with one main charity, we will run out of differnt things to do. The lifeboat would be a good charity.

I hope this isn't going to upset or annoy anybody, but I really don't mind how we raise money, how many charities we support or whatever. Once we actually get the charity/charities sorted out I'll be as happy to help as anyone.

It looks like people want a local charity which is isn't otherwise well supported?

The RNLI doesn't really fit unless the collections are specifically for a new lifeboat for Skegness. All the RNLI donations go into a pot and get shared nationally and it's also well supported already.

My vote would be a local children's charity, rather than the local branch of a national charity.

I think we're more likely to raise money for a charity based and working locally  - a local children's hospice for example. Having been to a couple and met some of the parents as well as some of the kids, it brings it home to you how much respite care and end of life support mean not just to the kids but their parents and brothers and sisters too.

There was a woman who noticed my door plaques at the Kirton show and was saying she wished there would be greater support for the children's hospice she works for. I honestly can't remember what it was called, but I do remember that it was more local than Grimsby.

As for collecting, sticking to one charity means all of the fund raising focus can go to that cause, and of course it's one set of licenses etc. I don't think we'd run out of things to do - a main event every year and smaller ones to keep up momentum would work. The Italian Job does this, as does North Devon Mini Register, and they support single charities.

It's true that moving between charities every year would increase paperwork, but once the club's organised to get the right forms in each year it wouldn't be so bad - although changing who we're collecting for every year might make some people think we just can't make our minds up smile

At the same time, doing a combination of both (even with a "main" charity and an annual second charity) means the benefits of sticking to one may start to be lost. It might be a case of trying it for a couple of years and seeing how it goes - but the biggest problem still remains: who are we collecting for?

Just my 2p'th.

i went into focus today and they had collection buckets for leukaemia research though the buckets were official they didnt have proper lids on just some mesh ti-wrapped on to stop anyone putting their hands in...anyway i thought this is another good cause worth considering so i went on their web site and there is a local branch in boston further reading they will provide all items required from balloons to buckets and the official paperwork to enable fundraisers to collect ...take a look yourself (http://www.lrf.org.uk/en/1/home.html) and see what you think it maybe another worth consideration

Thankyou for your input sarah the ambucopter is a good cause but we supported them in 2008 and gave them a cheque for £2617 at our last anual xmas dinner. the lifeboat is always well supported even though i agree with your comments about them.

Thankyou for your comments ben but i totally disagree with your comments about when you wish upon a star. after researching the registered charity a little more the facts are as follows, the branch which we would be supporting is based in Waltham Grimsby, they support the children of Lincolnshire only, (which happens to be the second largest county in the country). they recieve no funding from central government, national lottery or regional HQ in Nottingham, or celebrity donations. All the monies recieved are from fund raising events throughout the year. They are based from home so have no overheads and run the Grimsby branch for free. The two organisers have done this for the past fifteen years giving up their time and effort for free for the benefit of the children. Because of the current recession they have really struggled this year to put on the Lapland trip this December, but due to their committment have just managed to hit the target of £60,000 which it costs. Children from Skeg, Boston, Louth and all the surrounding areas have benefitted from their hard work. In the context of 'Local' i feel they should be supported as in 2007 we supported St Andrew's which is not Skeg based and we gave them £1000 from our anual fund raising. In these hard times wouldn't it be nice to think that our efforts/contributions were being used to a very worthwhile cause. (however large or small)

Thankyou to everyone for your comments and views over the past few weeks on this subject, my proposal was just that, and of course will be decided on next week, even if the members decide not to support this charity on a full time or  year basis. We  in the past have gone out and raised monies for different charities over the past few years. (good amounts) giving up our time and petrol for free. We have all done this to help good causes and because we love our Mini's. We do it collectively because thats what we are a 'mini club' and we enjoy what we do together, even if we are not collecting for charity. No one is to say that we have to go out and do this, its what we've chosen to do. Whatever the outcome, the fact remains we are still a 'mini club' and participate in events for that reason.

Regards Ken.
